In underglaze red and blue wares, copper and cobalt oxides are used in conjunction as the pigments, first painted under the glaze, and then fired at a high temperature. First introducted in the Yuan Dynasty, it was difficult to control the tones as the two types of pigments reacted to the firing conditions differenly. Today, as in the past, attempts to utilize these colors in the same piece often result in a variety of pleasing shades that compliment one another."
